Differences of degree: representations of India in British medical topography, 1820-c. 1870.

چکیده
After several decades of scholarship on science and empire, it is now largely accepted that disciplines such as medicine and geography played a crucial role in imperial expansion. On a purely technical level these disciplines were important "tools of empire", enabling colonizers to map their new domains and to exploit more effectively their human and material resources.2 But following the work of Michel Foucault3 and Edward Said,4 historians have become more sensitive to the ideological dimensions of colonial science; not least its role in naturalizing distinctions between rulers and ruled. Such issues form part of a more general interest-typified by the work of the Subaltern Studies school of South Asian historians-in how the

Groups with Two Extreme Character Degrees and their Minimal Faithful Representations
for a finite group G, we denote by p(G) the minimal degree of faithful permutation representations of G, and denote by c(G), the minimal degree of faithful representation of G by quasi-permutation matrices over the complex field C. In this paper we will assume that, G is a p-group of exponent p and class 2, where p is prime and cd(G) = {1, |G : Z(G)|^1/2}. Then we will s...

By a quasi-permutation matrix we mean a square matrix over the complex field C with non-negative integral trace. Thus every permutation matrix over C is a quasipermutation matrix. For a given finite group G, let p(G) denote the minimal degree of a faithful permutation representation of G (or of a faithful representation of G by permutation matrices), let q(G) denote the minimal degree of a fai...

متن کاملThe Treatment of Insane Patients in India in the Lunatic Asylums of the Nineteenth Century1
British colonialists established lunatic asylums in India for the treatment of insane Europeans and Indians modeled on English institutions. They were initially constructed as they were in other parts of the British empire and the world to segregate those who were dangerous or troublesome to their neighbors by reason of mental illness. Such asylums were in fact detention centers. Based on the a...
متن کاملTexts and Politics: Postcolonial Revaluations of two British Classics
The major argument of this essay is that Kipling treats the colonial subject as the "other," and Forster proves to be almost as pro-Empire as writers like Kipling. Nevertheless, A Passage to India is eloquent in rejecting British values and introducing Indian voices. This novel records a shift in attitude in terms of exposing the bitter realities about and attitudes of British imperialists. Des...
